Creative Proteomics Lipidomics Upgrades Its Medium-Chain and Long-Chain Fatty Acids Analysis Service

Lipidomics, a platform developed by Creative Proteomics, is dedicated to providing cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based lipidomic research services for biomedical institutions as well as biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies. The company has recently upgraded its medium-chain and long-chain fatty acid analysis service. This service can provide reflections on lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and endocrine function of the human body by measuring the content of free fatty acids, which are important for exploring disease pathogenesis and prevention.

Fatty acids are a class of organic compounds with aliphatic hydrocarbon chains containing a carboxyl group at one end. Fatty acids can be divided into saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids, and according to the position of the double bond, unsaturated fatty acids can be further divided into the ω-3, ω-6, ω-9 series and so on. In the case of sufficient oxygen supply, fatty acids can be oxidized and decomposed into carbon dioxides and water molecules, releasing a large amount of energy, which is one of the major energy sources of the body.

Fatty acid β-oxidation is the primary pathway of fatty acid decomposition within the body. Fatty acid oxidation not only releases energy but also generates the acetyl-CoA molecule, an intermediate that participates in various essential biochemical reactions. Fatty acids can be completely oxidized in most tissues for carbon dioxide and water molecules generation, except for the liver. In fact, the oxidation of fatty acids is highly complex and affords various intermediate metabolites, such as acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, etc. Fatty acids are not only necessary for nutrition but are also related to children’s growth, development, and overall health. Notably, fatty acids reserve therapeutic effects for the regulation of hypertriglyceridemia and the prevention of coronary heart disease and are related to important physiological functions such as intellectual development and memory.

Short-chain fatty acids consist of less than 6 carbon atoms within the hydrocarbon chains and are volatile fatty acids. Medium-chain fatty acids consist of 6-12 carbon atoms within the hydrocarbon chain, mainly covering octanoic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). Long-chain fatty acids consist of more than 12 carbon atoms, which contain the methyl group at one end and the carboxyl group at the other end of the hydrocarbon chain. The simultaneous detection and quantification of free fatty acids in a biological sample is relatively challenging. The presented data represents only 10% of the total fatty acids in biological samples, and low detection and high fluctuation over a wide dynamic range are often found.

“We use liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (Triple Quad™ 6500 LC-MS/MS System) for medium-chain fatty acid and long-chain fatty acid analysis, thus, qualitatively and quantitatively measuring the full spectrum of fatty acids in biological samples, such as urine, whole blood, blood serum, and blood plasma. The measurement of fatty acid reflects the lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and endocrine function of the body, which is important for the study of diseases pathogenesis and prevention,” commented a senior scientist at Creative Proteomics.
